Oatly has been making oat-based products since 1994 but only became a household brand in recent years, thanks to its expanded and rebranded vegan products such as oat milk, ice cream, yogurt, and more. While its home base is Malmo, Sweden, Oatly distributes its products across 20 countries, including the United States where the publicly traded company made its debut in coffee shops in 2017.

Sweden is not the only country where 7-Eleven is expanding its plant-based options. Earlier this month, 7-Eleven launched an exciting new vegan option on its Healthy to Go menu at 550 stores across Canada.

"This single-origin coffee is a true 'farm-to-cup' experience that coffee lovers can only get at 7-Eleven stores," said Michelle Cram, senior platform manager of hot beverages for 7-Eleven. "El Salvador Bourbon also celebrates a unique time in 7-Eleven history, as we have completed a direct trade by meeting with the coffee farmers. We worked closely with our roasting partners to identify the ideal roast level for this specific bean to ensure we were offering our coffee customers the absolute best cup possible."

7-Eleven introduced the Seven Reserve coffee line in March 2018 with its Africa Blend, a 50-50 blend of 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified Arabica beans from Ethiopia and Rwanda. The company also offers coffees from Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, Sumatra and Colombia. Single-origin, 100% Colombian Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee is now a permanent offering and top seller on the hot beverage bar, 7-Eleven said.

"We know our customers care about coffee crops that are responsibly grown and sourced from small farms," Cram said. "7-Eleven coffee drinkers recognize great quality and taste, and the premium Rainforest Alliance Certified coffees have become some of our most sought-after hot beverages."

Coffee has become part of American culture, with 44 percent of Americans consuming between two and three 7-ounce cups of coffee per day on average, according to Statista. Some people find a brew a necessity, with two percent drinking 11 or more cups of coffee a day. Even the cast of HBO smash Game of Thrones treated themselves to a coffee on set.

But coffee itself comes from what is called the "Bean Belt" which is located between latitudes 25 degrees north and 30 degrees south. This belt is ideal for growing coffee beans due to its climate. Beans are grown in 50 different countries including Hawaii, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Kenya and more.

Bourbon refers to a coffee varietal grown in El Salvador that produces high-quality Arabica beans with a smooth and distinctive taste. After disease devastated the country's coffee production, many local farmers planted Bourbon coffee cherry trees to replace the lost crops and have helped the country regain much of its coffee yields, the convenience store chain said.

7-Eleven continues to grow its portfolio of sustainable coffees, which now account for well over half of its green coffee purchases. Since 2016, 7-Eleven has introduced Rainforest Alliance Certified coffees from Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, Sumatra and Colombia as well as an African blend from Ethiopia and Rwanda, all responsibly grown. 7-Eleven said single-origin 100% Colombian Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee is now a permanent offering and a top seller on the hot beverage bar.

The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that seeks to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods. Carrying the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal with the little green frog means the 100% Arabica beans are sourced from coffee-growers whose farms must meet strict standards designed to protect the environment, conserve wildlife and promote the well-being of local communities.

7-Eleven, which operates, franchises and/or licenses more than 69,000 stores in 17 countries including 11,800 in North America, said future Seven Reserve coffees will include both exotic blends and single-origin brews from top growing areas around the world.
